PROJECT FRAMEWORK

NATURA 2000
NATURA 2000 is a European network of nature reserves which aims to protect and develop endangered habitats as well as animal and plant species throughout Europe for future generations.

The choice of which types and habitats to be protected in Europe has been determined by the EU according to binding statutory provisions - in the Bird Protection Directive (since 1979) and in the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive (FFH) (since 1992).

Both of these directives obligate EU member states to select and protect a number of regions, and thereby make an important contribution towards the preservation of the diversity of wild animals and plant species as well as their natural habitats.

LIFE
LIFE is an EU assistance program set up to finance restoration projects in NATURA 2000 Regions. The English word "life" was chosen because it is recognized by many and "LIFE" is the same as the French acronym for "L’Instrument Financier pour l’Environnement".

The qualification for EU co-financing is the approval of project areas as a NATURA 2000 site.

Following the LIFE Projects "Wengermoor" and "Weidmoos", "Untersberg Foreland" is the third Salzburg LIFE Project!
