BUTTERFLY COUNTRY AT THE FOOT OF THE UNTERSBERG

Near the city of Salzburg, at the foot of the northern slope of the Untersberg, lies one of the natural jewels of the Province of Salzburg - the circa 190 hectare Natura 2000 site, the "Untersberg Foreland".

The steep climbing flanks of the Untersberg create a marked backdrop to the south. To the north, the land opens towards the level valley landscape of Salzach and Saalach into the Salzburg basin.

The region is dominated by traditional agricultural and forestry land use. It is comprised of a rich variety of small park-like meadow landscapes - a mosaic of haymeadows, pastures, narrow brooks and copses. Around the Salzburg Open-air Museum up to the Untersberg, one can also find large areas of closed forest.

The variety in the region offers a habitat for countless butterflies that have become rare.
